It’s not unusual for people to leave work early on a long weekend. Sometimes they clock out a few hours before to avoid traffic, sometimes they take the day off (especially if it’s a Friday).
Christmas is even worse. Depending on which day the 25th lands on, some can – and will – take almost 3 weeks off. This usually happens when the holiday lands on a Tuesday or Wednesday. What’s a few extra days, right?
It’s great if you’re able to take that time off, but it’s not when you have to contact people and there’s no one in the office. Who can you contact? How about if it’s a random emergency? And there are always random emergencies when you least expect them – hence the randomness.
That’s not to say everyone should remain at work. A skeletal crew is ideal, but not every company has the staff. Why not have at least have one person reachable via email? Throw on an “out of office” contact list with names and emails of those who are reachable when others are not. It’s better than being ghosted for the holidays.
